The American dog tick, or wood tick, is a tick species found throughout the U.S., except in the Rocky Mountain region. These ticks are brown with distinctive grayish-white markings and can grow from 3/16” to 5/8” when engorged. They have an oval, flattened body, with larvae having six legs and adults having eight.
While dogs are their primary host, these ticks can bite humans and carry diseases like Rocky Mountain spotted fever. The risk of exposure is highest in the spring and early summer. Maintaining a well-kept lawn and regularly checking pets can help reduce the chance of a tick problem.
Known for their reddish-brown color, Brown Dog Ticks frequently latch onto dogs and flourish in warm climates such as California’s. When their canine hosts aren’t accessible, they may also bite humans.
As adults, Brown Dog Ticks measure about 1/8″ but can swell to 1/2″ after feeding. They start with six legs as larvae and grow eight legs as nymphs and adults. It’s crucial to remove these ticks from pets swiftly to prevent health problems. Regularly inspect pets and clean their environments to keep infestations at bay.
Pacific Coast ticks are common along trails and shrublands from Oregon to Baja California, making them a common sight in Granite Bay. Active mainly during the cooler months like April and May, they bite a variety of hosts, including humans. Adults usually feed on larger mammals, such as horses, deer, and cattle, but can also target dogs and people.
These ticks are known carriers of Rocky Mountain spotted fever, tularemia, and bovine anaplasmosis. They can also cause tick-bite paralysis in livestock. About 11% of adult ticks carry bacteria that cause Pacific Coast tick fever, a disease often confused with Rocky Mountain spotted fever.
The Western Black-Legged Tick thrives along the Pacific Coast, from California to British Columbia, and is the primary Lyme disease carrier in the region. These ticks are commonly found in forests, grasslands, and areas near water but can also be present in scrubby habitats. They are closely linked to the Eastern Black-Legged Tick but are primarily located in the western United States.
Adult ticks are most active from winter through early summer, and the nymphs are most prevalent in April, May, and June. Nymphs feed on small animals like rodents and lizards, and rarely bite humans or pets. Clearing your yard of excess vegetation and debris can help minimize tick activity.
At Granite Bay Pest Control, the tick control process starts with a comprehensive inspection of your property. Our technician will search for tick-friendly areas, such as tall grass, thick bushes, and shaded regions, ensuring no potential tick habitats are left unchecked.
We’ll also focus on places where your pets typically spend time, as these spots are often high-risk for ticks. This targeted inspection is crucial for developing a customized treatment that keeps your home and yard free from ticks.
We begin by understanding your needs for tick control, focusing on whether indoor or outdoor treatments are necessary—or perhaps both. For households with pets, addressing both areas is typically the most effective strategy. This helps us create a tailored plan for your property.
Our technician will inspect your yard to locate tick hotspots. We treat up to half an acre using moisture-activated granules for lasting protection. Larger areas can be treated at an additional cost. For indoor treatments, we use a B&G sprayer to ensure thorough application in critical spots.
We offer a free two-week follow-up after the initial tick treatment to ensure any newly hatched ticks are removed. Our technician will re-inspect both the indoor and outdoor areas that were treated to make sure the ticks are fully eradicated.
If needed, treatments will be reapplied to prevent reinfestation and break the tick life cycle. We strive to ensure your home and yard stay tick-free for the safety of your pets and family.
