Billbugs are beetles in the weevil family, typically ranging from 1/2 to 1 inch in length. They are distinguished by a long snout, somewhat like an elephant’s trunk, and come in shades of gray to brown. Their larvae, which resemble legless grubs, are white and feed on roots and stems underground. Billbugs primarily feed on grasses and crops in gardens. The adult beetles bore into stems to feed and lay their eggs, while the larvae continue causing harm underground.
Billbugs generally produce one generation per year. The adults overwinter in thatch and leaf litter, laying eggs in grass stems as temperatures rise. The larvae hatch within weeks and start feeding on the plants. Grass damage or failing crops may be the result of billbug infestations, making early detection essential to managing them.
Blister beetles are soft-bodied insects that range in size from 1 to 2.5 cm. Their color varies from ash gray to bright yellow with black stripes. These beetles secrete a blistering agent called cantharidin, which can cause skin irritation. Although once used in medicine, its toxicity has curtailed its use.
Blister beetles can pose a serious threat to crops, especially ornamental and vegetable plants. Contaminated hay can be dangerous to livestock if consumed. To minimize the damage, it’s important to inspect fields frequently and remove any hay that shows signs of infestation.
Carpet beetles are small oval-shaped pests, usually measuring 1 to 4 mm, with bodies featuring black, white, and yellow patterns. Their larvae are brown to black, hairy, and slightly larger than the adults. These pests can infiltrate homes through open windows or doors and can also be introduced with fresh-cut plants.
Larvae of carpet beetles consume wool, silk, leather, and fur, leading to notable damage to fabrics. Females can lay up to 100 eggs in the spring, which hatch into larvae within about two weeks. Preventing infestations requires keeping susceptible items clean and properly stored.
The Citrus Longhorned Beetle is a major concern for Granite Bay trees. These beetles are glossy black with white spots, reaching up to 35mm in length. They attack healthy trees, feed on leaves, and lay eggs by tunneling into the wood. Infestations are marked by round holes, exposed roots, and sawdust-like frass at the base.
Control measures begin with a comprehensive inspection. Infested trees must be destroyed to stop the spread. This invasive beetle from Asia poses a risk to trees such as pecan, apple, sycamore, pine, and willow. Quick detection and removal are critical.
In North America, click beetles are commonly encountered. They have elongated, dark-colored bodies, either black or brown, with adults reaching around 1/2 to 1 inch in length. These nocturnal insects are attracted to lights and hide during the day.
The larvae live beneath the surface, feeding on seeds, plant roots, and small insects, sometimes leading to crop damage. If you spot adult click beetles indoors, they may have entered your home to escape the cold or look for food.
Fireflies, commonly known as lightning bugs, are beetles that light up warm summer nights. There are about 200 species across the U.S., particularly in regions near water sources like ponds and streams. Fireflies don’t bite, sting, or carry diseases, making them harmless to humans, though large numbers can be a problem.
They glow to attract mates and lay eggs in damp soil, where their larvae feed on insects and earthworms. If you’re noticing too many fireflies around your property, Granite Bay Pest Control can help control their population for a more pleasant outdoor experience.
Foreign grain beetles are reddish-brown pests, typically about 2 to 3 mm long. Though they mainly infest grain storage areas, they can also thrive in moist environments like wet walls, humid bathrooms, or forgotten food items. These beetles feed on moldy grains, fungi, and dead insects.
To manage foreign grain beetles, it’s important to keep storage spaces dry and clean. Discard any contaminated food products and maintain proper ventilation in living areas to control moisture. Routine cleaning and timely removal of damp items can prevent future infestations.
Ground beetles are frequently found throughout the U.S., including Granite Bay. They are recognizable by their black, flat, and elongated bodies, ranging from 1/16 to 1 inch. During the day, they prefer to hide in dark areas, but at night they become active, easily climbing trees and structures to search for food.
These beetles feed on pests like aphids, larvae, and slugs, which can be beneficial. However, when their numbers grow too large, they become a problem. The best way to prevent ground beetles is by removing debris and sealing cracks around your property.
Japanese beetles, known for their metallic green and copper-toned wings, can cause widespread damage to over 300 plant species. They devour leaves and flowers, leaving a “skeletonized” look behind. Their larvae, or grubs, feed on grass roots, further affecting lawns.
Granite Bay Pest Control offers effective treatments targeting both adult Japanese beetles and their larvae. Our solutions are designed to preserve the health of your plants and keep your garden looking its best.
June beetles, commonly called May bugs, are scarab beetles that appear in late spring and early summer. Adult June bugs are reddish-brown, and their clumsy flight often results in them hitting windows. Their larvae, also known as white grubs, are off-white, soft, and equipped with six legs and brown heads.
June bugs eat leaves, damaging plants and shrubs. The larvae feed on the roots of grass, leaving behind dry, bare patches in lawns. This damage can attract animals like moles and voles that dig up lawns to hunt for the larvae.
Asian Lady Beetles are small insects, approximately 7 mm long, and come in a variety of colors from yellow to red with spots. They have a distinctive “M” shaped mark behind their heads. While these beetles can help reduce aphids and other pests, they often become a nuisance when they invade homes looking for warmth.
At Granite Bay Pest Control, we focus on sealing gaps and cracks around entry points like windows and doors. We also install screens to prevent these beetles from entering. Regularly clearing away leaf piles or debris near the home further reduces their hiding places.
Stink beetles, also known as darkling or circus beetles, are typically found in sandy regions, rotting vegetation, or beneath logs. They can be anywhere from 1/2 to 1 1/2 inches in size and are usually dark brown or black. When threatened, they release a strong odor as a defense.
At Granite Bay Pest Control, we eliminate stink beetles by removing their ideal habitats, such as decaying plant matter. Keeping your outdoor areas clean is also crucial. To further protect your home, we ensure all entry points are sealed. If you have a stink beetle problem, call us for professional assistance.
Whitemarked spider beetles, common in Granite Bay, are light brown pests with white patches of hair on their wing covers. These insects, resembling spiders due to their long legs and round abdomens, grow to about 1/4 inch in length. They typically infest spoiled grains and dried fruits.
These beetles are often found in humid places, including homes, food storage facilities, and even libraries or warehouses. Females lay their eggs near food, and their larvae mature over two to three months.
Our beetle control begins with a thorough property inspection to identify the beetle species and evaluate the extent of the infestation. This ensures we use the appropriate treatment for your situation.
Following the inspection, we implement a tailored plan designed to target both adult beetles and larvae. Our goal is to rapidly reduce the beetle numbers and secure your property from further harm.
Granite Bay Pest Control emphasizes follow-up visits to fully remove beetles. After the initial treatment, our technicians will revisit your home to verify the effectiveness of the first procedure. This follow-up helps us check for any lingering beetles or signs of new infestations.
We’ll carefully inspect the previously treated areas, and if required, apply additional treatments. This follow-up disrupts the beetle life cycle, ensuring future infestations are avoided. We aim to keep your home beetle-free for the long term.
Granite Bay Pest Control provides reliable beetle prevention and monitoring. Our experts inspect your property thoroughly, identifying entry points and areas prone to infestation. We encourage maintaining cleanliness and storing food securely to limit beetle attractants.
During peak seasons, we install traps to catch beetle activity early, addressing the issue before it worsens. Count on Granite Bay Pest Control for continuous, effective protection against beetles throughout the year.
